Key takeaways
  • You can now connect Precip to Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, Muse, and other AI assistants using our MCP server at https://api.precip.ai/mcp.
  • Ask about what actually fell, what's coming in the next hour, or soil conditions at any point in the US and Canada.
  • Sign in once with your Precip account and your assistant can see your saved locations — and save new ones when you ask.

If you ask ChatGPT or Claude how much it rained on your farm last night, you usually get one of two things: a regional forecast it found on the web, or the reading from an airport twenty miles away. Neither tells you whether you can get into the north field this morning.

The assistant isn’t bad at the question. It just doesn’t have the data.

Now you can give it ours. We built an MCP server — the open standard that Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, Muse, and most other AI assistants use to plug into outside tools — so your assistant can pull straight from Precip. Same 1 km observed rainfall, same minute-by-minute nowcast, same forecasts and soil data you see in the app, anywhere in the US and Canada.

It already knows your places

The first time you connect, your assistant opens a quick Precip sign-in page. Once you allow it, it can see the locations you’ve saved in Precip, including the ones in your organizations.

That means you don’t have to paste coordinates or look up addresses. You can just ask about a place the way you talk about it:

  • “How much rain did the north field get since Tuesday?”
  • “Is it going to rain at the job site in the next hour?”
  • “Which of our three farms got the most rain over the last 30 days?”
  • “What’s the soil temperature at the home place — warm enough to plant corn?”
  • “Save 42.03, -93.62 as the Ames plot and tell me what fell there yesterday.”

Under the hood, the assistant picks whichever Precip layers fit the question: recent rain events, rolling 12- to 168-hour totals, daily, hourly, or minute-by-minute precipitation, snow depth, soil moisture and temperature, air temperature, humidity, wind, pressure, cloud cover, or solar radiation. And because it’s in the middle of your conversation, you can ask a follow-up — have it turn the numbers into a text for your crew, or compare this week to the week before.

When you ask it to save a new location, give it the latitude and longitude if you want the pin on the exact spot. New saves count toward your plan’s location limit, and saving to an organization requires admin or editor access.

How to connect

The server URL is https://api.precip.ai/mcp.

In Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, or Muse, add a custom connector and paste that URL.

In other MCP clients, add a remote server to your config:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "precip": {
      "url": "https://api.precip.ai/mcp"
    }
  }
}

When the Precip sign-in page opens, sign in with Google, Apple, Microsoft, or email — if you don’t have an account yet, that creates a free one — and click Allow. No API key to copy around. (If you’re using a client that can’t open a browser window, any paid plan also comes with a personal API key you can pass as a header. Details are in the developer docs.)

What’s included

A free Precip account comes with 25 weather lookups a month, and every paid plan includes 100 a day. Browsing your saved locations and saving new ones don’t count against that.

Free and personal access is for non-commercial use. If you’re building a product on top of our data, querying lots of locations at once, or need bulk exports, book a demo and we’ll get you set up.
