Airport observations are designed for aviation. In lake-effect zones, coastal squalls, or terrain-influenced regions, totals can vary by several inches over 10 miles. If the airport received 1.2 inches but a shopping center received 2.5 inches, billing from the airport leaves money on the table.

No. Certified Snowfall Totals® is a WeatherWorks product name. Precip issues a Verified Snowfall Report from a 1 km radar and gauge grid — not a WeatherWorks CST report.
How does Precip measure snowfall without a physical gauge?
Precip fuses NOAA dual-polarization radar (NEXRAD), quality-controlled gauges, and surface temperature into a 1 km grid (about 160 acres per cell). Each hour's liquid-equivalent snow is converted to depth with that hour's snow-to-liquid ratio.
Why do airport weather station totals differ from my job site?
NOAA/ASOS stations sit at regional airports, often 10 to 25 miles from commercial sites. Lake-effect bands, squalls, and terrain can change totals by several inches across a metro. Precip estimates what fell over the 1 km cell at the pin you choose.
